I am a [chronic] migraine patient and I am writing to you to express my concerns regarding the lack of access to triptan type medications (a common migraine rescue medication) for patients on government benefit programs. Migraine is a prevalent, disabling condition that affects a significant portion of the Canadian population. Disability associated with migraine creates considerable sociocultural economic burdens despite the fact that migraine is not regarded as a serious disease. Access to safe, effective treatment for migraine can be a difficult process for patients as many medication options are costly and Canada is one of the only countries in the world – with universal healthcare – which does not provide citizens with universal drug coverage. There are 7 triptan drugs available by prescription in Canada. According to a report by the Ontario Drug Policy Research Network (ODPRN) triptans are regarded as an “effective and safe treatment for the management of acute migraine”. Unfortunately, many Canadians who receive provincially regulated benefits are unable to access these medications either due to dose restrictions, unreasonably rigid guidelines around use or because these medications are not even listed as a benefit in the first place. This results in patients having to make a choice between unnecessary suffering/exacerbating their disability and/or having to pay for medication out of pocket that they cannot afford.

As a [chronic] migraine patient who has experienced these difficulties I am asking the government to include these medications on provincial formularies as soon as possible. Without public financial support, many Canadians are not able to access these medications and will not experience their benefit. These medications improve quality of life and lessen disability for patients so that they can be less of a burden on the healthcare system and contribute to society.
