I am writing to you as my elected official to raise awareness and discuss access to care for people with migraine. Currently primary care physicians receive less than one day in their education dedicated to effective treatment for migraine disease and other disabling headache conditions. Treatment protocols exist that can help to reduce the frequency and intensity of attacks however in Canada there are not enough health care practitioners properly trained to deliver treatment. Experts estimate that migraine affects 4.5 million (12%) of Canadians and that 1-2% live with chronic migraine 15 or more headache days per month). I am one of these people and without a trained medical professional to design a treatment protocol and prescribe medications, my life (and that of my loved ones) is deeply impacted in the worst way. Canada is currently considered a third world country in terms of treatment for migraine. This should be unacceptable. Migraine research has exploded in recent years and new treatments are becoming available like CGRPs, ditans and gepants and yet, many of us cannot even find a medical professional with whom to discuss the medical advances and treatments available. I want to be a contributing member of Canadian society and research shows that proper diagnosis and treatment can translate to increased days of normal function and significantly improved health outcomes.
