Programs and services for persons with disabilities mean many different things to many different people. Each individual accesses different programs based on their wants and needs. Sometimes, the largest barrier is knowing where to start.

Extended Health Benefits for Specified Disease Conditions Program
About This Program
The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) sponsors the Extended Health Benefits program to provide non-Aboriginal and Métis residents of the Northwest Territories who have specified disease conditions with certain benefits not covered by hospital and medical care insurance.
Through this program, you receive coverage for eligible prescription drugs, medical supplies and equipment. You may also receive benefits related to medical travel such as meals, and accommodations.
Who can apply for Extended Health Benefits (EHB)?
- A permanent resident of the Northwest Territories (NWT)
- Non-Indigenous
- Have a valid NWT Health Care Card

Income Assistance for Seniors and Persons with Disabilities
About This Program
Overview: This program provides financial assistance to Northwest Territories (NWT) seniors and persons with disabilities to help meet their basic needs. The program ensures clients have the opportunity to develop greater financial security, so they are able to participate in community life and share in opportunities available throughout the NWT.
Available Funding: Funding is based on family income, and community. The program assists with actual amounts for shelter and utilities.
Deadline: Income Assistance for Seniors and Persons with Disabilities is an annual program; applicants must apply and provide all required documents to be assessed. Applications are accepted July 1 of each year, or any time afterwards. Clients may be required to provide their utility bills each month for payment.
Eligibility: This program is designed for:
- NWT residents who are between 19 and 59 with a permanent or long-term disability, or
- NWT residents who are seniors (60+); and
- Have a need greater than their income.

To apply, complete an application for Income Assistance for Seniors and Persons with Disabilities and visit a local ECE Service Centre to provide your identification and information on your finances.

Senior Citizens’ and Disabled Persons’ Property Tax Relief

About This Program
The Senior Citizens’ and Disabled Persons’ Property Tax Relief is a program that helps seniors and people with disabilities pay less or no property tax. Taxes are lowered depending on the type of property owned or occupied. You have to apply for this program every year.

- If you live in Fort Simpson, Fort Smith, Hay River, Inuvik, Norman Wells or Yellowknife, contact your municipal government office for information on its Property Tax Relief Program for Seniors and Disabled Persons.

About This Program
Overview
This program provides financial assistance to eligible Northwest Territories (NWT) residents to assist with post-secondary education-related expenses.
Available Funding
- Grants for Students with Disabilities
- up to $4,000 per academic year for assistance with tuition, books, travel and accommodation; and
- up to $20,000 per academic year to assist with eligible expenses, such as a tutor, interpreter, special equipment, etc.
Deadline
Annual deadlines are:
- June 30 for programs starting between August 1 to September 30,
- October 31 for programs starting between December 1 to January 31, or
- One month prior to the program start date for all other months.
- The course reimbursement application deadline is one year from the start of your course.
Applications for loan repayment incentives must be submitted twice a year: by April 15 and by October 15.
Eligibility
NWT Residents interested in pursuing part-time or full-time post-secondary education. To qualify for SFA, you must:
- be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident of Canada or a protected person of Canada;
- be a resident of the NWT according to program criteria;
- study at an approved designated institution;
- be enrolled in an approved, post-secondary program or course as defined by SFA; ensure your previous SFA student loans are up-to-date;
- make arrangements to repay any outstanding Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) debts; and
- not be receiving student financial aid from another provincial, territorial or federal program.

Note:
- You must apply each academic year to continue receiving funding.
- Applicants do not have to be accepted into a program before applying for SFA. However, before they can start receiving SFA, they must be enrolled in an approved post-secondary program.
