I am writing to you as my elected official to raise awareness and discuss the new anti-CGRP class of medications to treat migraine. I have had the opportunity to be prescribed and benefit from these new, effective, safe, and tolerable medications. For me, these medications have been life changing. I am writing to request the government include all new medications to our provincial drug program. 

Experts estimate that migraine affects 4.5 million (12%) of Canadians and that 1-2% live with chronic migraine 15 or more headache days per month). I am one of these people and without my CGRP medication, my life (and my loved ones) is deeply impacted in the worst way.

Although current therapies are sufficient for some Canadian patients to manage their migraine, for many, like me, these therapies are ineffective leaving me in pain, bedridden and disabled. There have not been any effective preventative medications designed to treatment migraine since 1993.  These new CGRP’s are effective, safe, and tolerable and have given Canadians, like me, back many days of normal function and significantly improved health outcomes.

As a person living with chronic migraine who has experienced first-hand how life changing CGRP’s can be, I am asking the government to include these medications on our drug plan as soon as possible. Without public financial support, many Canadians are not able to access these medications and will not experience the benefit. These medications can improve quality of life and be less of a burden on the healthcare system and contribute to society.
