I am writing to you as my elected official to raise awareness of migraine, its impact on my life and request the new anti-CGRP class of medications be added to our provincial formulary to treat migraine. These new, effective, safe, and tolerable medications are life-changing for many migraine patients. I unfortunately do not have private insurance. 

Although current therapies are sufficient for some Canadian patients to manage their migraine, for many, like me, these therapies are ineffective leaving me in pain, bedridden and disabled. There have not been any effective preventative medications designed to treatment migraine since 1993.  

My physician is recommending, because no other therapies have been effective, that I start treatment to a CGRP. As mentioned, I unfortunately do not have private insurance and cannot get access to these medications without financial support from the provincial drug plan.

Experts estimate that migraine affects 4.5 million (12%) of Canadians and that 1-2% live with chronic migraine (15 or more headache days per month). I am one of these people and am greatly impacted by my migraine disorder and there is no cure. Accessing an effective medication is critical to my future.

As a person living with chronic migraine, I am asking the government to include CGRP’s on our drug plan immediately. Without access to this medication, I have no quality of life. I am not able to be a productive member of society and I not able to be the parent and spouse compared to when I am migraine free or have reduced severity and/or frequency. I will continue to be a burden to the healthcare system with frequent visits to the emergency department and appointments with my doctor(s). This stress on our healthcare system can be avoided by including these medications on our provincial drug plan.  

I hope by what I have shared will help to reduce stigma and contribute to your team making a policy to include CGRP’s on our provincial formulary. Public coverage for me is the only way I can access this class of medications.
